Maintaining proper closed-house conditions during a radon test is critically important for ensuring that the results accurately reflect your home’s normal radon levels rather than artificially low or artificially high readings caused by unusual ventilation conditions. Closed-house conditions mean keeping all windows and exterior doors closed as much as possible during the testing period – except for normal entry and exit – and avoiding the operation of fans or ventilation systems that bring outdoor air into the home.

The required closed-house period begins at least 12 hours before the test begins and must be maintained throughout the entire testing period for short-term tests. Normal operation of heating and cooling systems that recirculate indoor air is fine, but systems that draw in significant amounts of outdoor air should be set to recirculation mode if possible. Whole-house fans and high-volume ventilation systems should not be operated during the testing period. It’s also important that no major construction or renovation work that would significantly disturb the foundation or alter air movement patterns be conducted during the test.
