How Does Radon Mitigation Work?
Radon mitigation works by actively drawing radon gas from beneath your home and safely venting it above the roofline, preventing it from entering your living space. Most systems use a fan and PVC piping to create negative pressure under the foundation, redirecting radon from the soil to the outside air where it quickly dilutes.
- Sub-slab depressurization: A pipe is inserted through the slab into the soil and connected to a fan that continuously pulls radon-laden air from under the house.
- Vent to above roofline: The fan pushes radon through vertical piping that discharges safely above the roof, away from windows and openings.
- Sealing entry points: Cracks, gaps around pipes, sump covers, and other openings in the slab or foundation are sealed to reduce radon entry and improve system efficiency.
- Pressure balancing: The system is designed so the pressure under the slab is lower than indoors, guiding radon into the pipes instead of into the house.
- Fan operation and monitoring: A continuously running fan and a visual indicator (like a manometer) show the system is working; follow-up radon tests confirm levels remain low.
